About Emory and Henry College

Emory and Henry College, also known as E&H, Emory, or the College, is a private liberal arts college located in Emory, which is a census-designated place in Washington County, in the US state of Virginia, with over 2200 people, living within its limits, at the time of the 2000 census.

The college was established in 1836 and it is listed as one of 40 `Colleges that Change Lives.` It was founded by Creed Fulton, a Methodist minister, Colonel William Byars, Tobias Smyth, a Methodist farmer, and Alexander Findlay, a Methodist businessman, and gets its name from John Emory, a Methodist bishop, and Patrick Henry, an American Patriot and Virginia's first governor.

E&H currently offers its students `more than 26 programs of study, including our interdisciplinary programs, which allow students to combine classes from more than one subject area to create a more specialized major.`

Athletics

The athletic teams at Emory and Henry College are nicknamed The Wasps and they participate in NCAA Division III, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Their distinctive colors are blue and gold.

Notable Alumni

Frank Rowlett - American cryptologist who cracked the Japanese code during World War II, and Joe L. Kincheloe - world renown author of 50 books on education, culture, and politics, are among the noteworthy alumni produced by Emory and Henry College.
